Yoggie Pico has released a Linux based USB Memory Stick for filtering the data transferred to a desktop computer over the internet.  This memory stick is said to be effective in blocking viruses, spyware and spam.

It includes a 520 MHz processor , 128 MB RAM and costs $179 .

MadTux and Vector Linux have released  Green Machine Linux PC with prices from US $139.00 onwards. It is fully configured and they claim that it has the fastest OS .

This seems to be the cheapest Linux desktop among all models available at present.

Running Windows applications on Linux Desktops

Linspire, Inc. and Virtual Bridges have jointly released the Win4Lin Pro Desktop for Linspire and Freespire users. It is available for download and installation through CNR technologies . This software allows Linux users to run Windows applications from the safety of their Linux desktop.

The Windows applications run at nearly the same speed and the existing Windows license can be reused for these applications. The introductory price of Win4Lin Pro Desktop for Linspire and Freespire users is $29.99 .

Red Hat’s new desktop Linux applications

Red Hat has announced its new desktop Linux applications which will work with Web services like those provided by Google. No software like Windows will be required for these web applications.

These may be popular in countries where broadband is cheap and easily available, but in countries like India, many of the largest ISP’s charge users for every MB of  information they upload or download from the internet. In such places,  Windows based applications will continue to be popular.
